Introducing Evangeline Lilly As The New Elf In ‘The Hobbit’ Movie

PicasaRemember her from the series, Lost? Well, with her in the second installation of the Hobbit, it seems Middle-earth just got a lot more interesting.

A new image from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has been released, revealing actress Evangeline Lilly as a feisty red-headed elf warrior. Talking about the character, Tauriel, Lilly says: ‘She’s slightly reckless and totally ruthless and doesn’t hesitate to kill.’

However, the character is a new recruit to the story and does not appear in J.R.R Tolkien’s original fantasy novel. Director Peter Jackson and his co-writers are said to have created the character to expand the world of Mirkwood Forest, and bring a more female element to the male-dominated Hobbit story.

‘She’s a Sylvan Elf, which means she’s of a much lower order than the elves we all became acquainted with in The Lord of the Rings,’ Lily explains. ‘She doesn’t hold the same kind of status that Arwen or Galadriel or Elrond or Legolas do — she’s much more lowly. She sort of goes against the social order of the elves a little bit.’

It will also of course create a love story to the film, which some Tolkien devotees may find hard to accept.

‘She will definitely have a love story,” Lilly tells EW. ‘I can’t give away too much about it.’

Well, don’t, please, Lilly. We’re actually looking forward to be thrilled and surprised, come December, when the movie will be released.
