Chris Brown Diagnosed with Mental Illness

Chris Brown 16Chris Brown’s angry outbursts may actually be attributed to mental illness. According to reports from TMZ, court documents reveal that Brown has been diagnosed with bi-polar disorder (BiPolar II to be exact), severe insomnia and Post Traumatic Stress disorder.

Yesterday Brown appeared in court for a progress hearing in the Rihanna assault case. The facility where Brown has just completed 90 days of anger management filed documents that confirm Brown voluntarily stayed for an extra 5 days of therapy.

Confirming public suspicion and speculation, an official from the rehab commented that Brown was self-medicating in a harmful way:

“Mr. Brown became aggressive and acted out physically due to his untreated mental health disorder, severe sleep deprivation, inappropriate self-medicating and untreated PTSD.”

Court documents also state that Brown is currently on medication for these conditions and has tested negative for illegal drugs including marijuana. The facility states he’s learning alternative relaxation techniques, gets up at 5AM and works hard so that he can maintain healthy levels of stress:

“Mr. Brown is able to use behavioral strategies to manage acting out on impulses.”

And apparently he’s on his best behavior with community service:

“Mr. Brown’s attitude has been beyond exemplary in regard to his community service responsibilities.”

Court documents state Brown reports to a highway cleanup labor crew in Los Angeles three days a week to fulfill the 750 hours of service remaining in his probation requirements.

Despite the diagnosis, a Los Angeles judge has ordered Brown to stay in the anger management/drug rehab program for an additional two months although he’s already been there for three. The singer still has to be tried on a Washington assault charge after punching a man on a sidewalk near the White House.

Ever since a brutally public domestic dispute case in 2009 with singer/ex-girlfriend Rihanna, Brown’s tendency to “pop off” has resulted in a series of problems. In 2011, after a tense interview with Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts, Brown allegedly became violent in his dressing room and threw a chair at a window overlooking Times Square. Early last year, the “Deuces” singer allegedly had a physical altercation with singer Frank Ocean over a parking spot and a few months later a video went viral of Brown having a heated argument with a valet over a $10 parking fee. We guess Chris takes his parking seriously.

Meanwhile his ex Rihanna has been spotted partying and performing with rapper Drake overseas in between texting Brown according to Bossip, fueling another round of rumors of the love triangle you may remember from 2012. A rep for Brown’s camp states:

“[Chris] is focused about his recovery. He only wants the best for her and is happy that she found someone.”

Although the violent behavior of media’s favorite bad boy makes for good headlines, there’s no ignoring that Chris is suffering from some serious anger issues. We’re glad to hear that he’s getting some help even if he relapses every now and then. Do you think Chris is legitimately sick or is this just another case of doctors explaining bad behavior away with bi-polar disorder?
