Finding Hubby (Episode 22)

We both shrieked along, me in delight, and Glo in shock, turning my living room into one big shriek-fest, at 11:30pm. When the shrieking had died down, Toke bid us farewell with a “he’s coming, gotta go, we’re about to celebrate”, and hung up. She actually said the last line #inWaconzyVoice

Almost as soon as Toke hung up, a text message came into my phone. I quickly opened it, thinking it was some follow-up gist. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw a message from Hawt Pastor, asking that I ensure I did not miss church for any reason the next day, since it had been so long ago he had seen me in church.

Once I had finished reading the sms, I turned to Gloria. “I’m listening…”

“It was like three years ago, and it wasn’t anything serious. I was in UK, and met him at a party. As you have experienced, he has a way with words and gestures. Things got crazy and it was a one night thing. I never thought I was ever going to see him again in my life, ever. There was no way I would ever have know he would end up as the love of my best friend’s life. Absolutely no way.”

I sat on the edge of the chair, as I realized the dilemma Gloria was going through.

“Please, do not tell Toke,” she begged. “She’s so happy with him and I don’t want to be the one that ruins everyone’s joy every time. Your wedding and now this…”

While what Gloria was saying made sense at a certain level, she was forgetting something.

“What if he tells her first?” I asked. “And if he met you before, why didn’t he say so? And why would he propose to her right after meeting you?” My questions came fast. “I think it would be better if she finds out from one of us than him. That’s going to look real bad and it will be more difficult to let her know it was just a foolishness of the past. She can decide if she wants to go on, knowing what she knows. He obviously hasn’t told her so she can make her decision to marry him. We need to give her the opportunity to make an informed decision. Otherwise we’ll be making the same mistake Ossy made when he didn’t give me full disclosure about Yomi’s sexuality.”

NYSC REMINISCENCES: THE COMMANDANT

Hostel B4 was in a flurry of activity. Boys were jumping off bunks, looking for food flasks, and washing cutlery – getting ready to go stand in line to collect the evening’s food ration. Other boys were already returning from the kitchen, bearing precious supper in plastic or stainless steel receptacles. Hyenas, we called these other boys. They would hover around the kitchen with their food containers long before food was ready, peeking in to see what the cooks were up to, and grumbling about how long it took to prepare a simple meal.

Donald was one of the hyenas. So I was not surprised when I saw him coming in with the first batch of food-collectors, swinging his dinner-laden flask and looking altogether too happy. Donald and I had met on our first day in camp, which was just a couple of days ago. He had tapped my forearm and said, “Sorry, did you attend ANSU?”

I had looked up at the bespectacled, dark and lanky six-footer, and said, “Yes, how did you know?”

He pointed at the ID card dangling from a ribbon around my neck. “I finished from the physics department,” he continued. I told him what I studied – biochemistry. We became friends, and were both pleased to learn we would be staying in the same hostel.

“You are waiting for the food to finish before you go and collect yours, abi?” he asked sitting on the bed beside my supine frame. He hunched his long torso to avoid his head making violent contact with the bunk above. I was reading an e-book I had downloaded on my BlackBerry, The History of Germany by Bayard Taylor. The chapter, ‘Hermann the First German Leader, 9 – 21A.D.’ fascinated me…

“This boy and Facebook, sef!”

“It’s not Facebook!” I protested, putting a secretive palm over the screen of my phone. “And what’s the kitchen serving us tonight?” I quickly moved the talk away from my online business.

Koko Concert – The Most Memorable of its kind

Screen-shot-2012-12-28-at-6.09.47-AMMost hypes don’t live up to their expectation, no one knows why, it just doesn’t happen.

Even the most optimistic of people who attended the Koko Concert at the Eko Atlantic City on December 27, 2012 left the venue fuming or physically too tired to react to the poor turnout of events that took place at the new Eko Atlantic City, off Ahmadu Bello, Victoria Island.
The first of many problems was the distance from the Eko Atlantic entrance to the venue of the show – all of 20KM. While cars were getting stuck in the sandy ground and traffic was building up, eager fans decided to walk the distance with the hope that their ‘endurance trek’ would be compensated with a good show.

For starters, D’banj and DKM Media deserve commendation for looking outside the overused and unnecessarily exorbitant Eko Hotel and Suites and looking for a new location; joining the likes of R28 & EME and Sound Sultan who have staged successful shows at Oceanview and Harbour Point respectively, as many industry players work to break Eko’s monopoly.

Koko Concert, which was meant to commence at 7PM kicked off at 10:24PM with comedians Baskethmouth and Bovi doing a tremendous job by keeping the crowd hyped up for the upcoming performances. There were a few opening performances from Saeon, Flowssickk, DRB Lasgisdi, Ajebutter 22, Orezi, Omo Akin, Seyi Shay, Dpzzle , Burna Boy, Shank, Dammy Krane, Lynxxx and Ice Prince who skipped out on the live band, embracing CD performance.

Top Earning Entertainers of 2012

They’re making money as if it’s going out of fashion; controlling assets that are making some oil tycoons want to consider a career switch. They’re living the real celeb life – hopping from private jets to limited edition cars and SUVs. With minimum earnings about N6.5M per month, and highest incomes nearing N50m per month in some cases, these fab few are raking in the big bucks, and making hundreds of their colleagues green with envy…
Here’s the definitive list of those who made the biggest dough in 2012.

Genevieve Nnaji1. Genevieve 49The Nollywood actress is ahead of her peers, benefiting from endless endorsements (Loya, MUD, Range Rover etc) and reaping dividends from private businesses she’s keeping off public glare. Paid a mind-boggling figure to act in the movie adaptation of Chimamanda Adichie’s ‘Half of a Yellow sun’, Ms Nnaji rarely takes up movie roles these days. When she does, it must be worth it.

D’Banj1. D'banj 08Gone are the days when he made N10m in a week. These days, the superstar entertainer is making more business deals than hits, and the figures are amazing, from CRBTs to distribution, content syndication, and several non-music projects. Paid between N5 and N15 for engagements, and enjoying royalty returns from here, the UK and US, the former Mo’hits front man could soon be moving from the millionaires to the billionaires’ club.

Compound Matters (Episode VII)

The dust of the morning’s fracas had barely settled when someone decided to bestow the evening with its own version. This time, it was Ebere, the landlord’s wife’s apprentice that started it off.

I’ve been here for three years and I still don’t know the name of the landlord’s wife. We all call her Mama Junior. She’s a light-skinned, soft-spoken, petite woman in her late thirties; she walks around with an air of quiet authority. At first, she strikes you as mousy; that is until you spend time with her and find out that you couldn’t be more wrong. She is vivacious, funny and the light of her husband’s life. She used to teach in one of the government secondary schools in Uwani; then she had Junior by caesarian section and during her maternity leave, she decided not to return to work. After weaning her son, her husband decided to open a hair salon for her. She says the hair salon pays better than her former job, although now, her income is dependent on the flow of customers and there is no job security.

Unlike other mothers who would’ve turned lionesses at the thought of their children being threatened in any way, Mama Junior, when she heard, went to meet Mrs. Azubuike to find out what had made her fly off the handle. Some of the compound’s occupants, who were around, lingered outside the Azubuikes’ apartment for the duration of her visit, waiting to see if there would be another conflagration. Nothing happened. After about an hour, both women emerged from the apartment; both were smiling, though Mrs. Azubuike was wiping tears with the corner of her wrapper. Some, minus me, seemed disappointed at the anticlimax to their expectations.

All was seemingly going well until this evening. It was around three-thirty and I was in the room watching the movie, Prince of Persia, admiring Jake Gyllenhaal’s stunts when someone knocked. I stayed the action on the TV, and then got up to see who it was. Ti-abasi was the one at the door. She usually comes around to my apartment for some girl talk; at twenty-two, she’s a couple of years younger than me and we share a lot of things in common, the main one being that we come from the same state. We both love reading and often exchange novels and any other interesting reading material. She is as dark as I am fair; in fact, she is the first girl whom I’ve met who is so dark-skinned and yet so beautiful; people often mistake her for a Yoruba girl and that doesn’t seem to bother her – she even plays along sometimes.

Crazed Cow Attacks Man in Onitsha

White Fulani CattleDrama ensued in Onitsha, Anambra State when a middle-aged man, Obinna Adimora, a trader at the Onitsha main market was hospitalised for the injuries he sustained after being attacked by an angry cow.

Obinna’s journey to the hospital bed started when occupants of a commercial building at Ben Aghaeze Street contributed and purchased a cow for the Christmas. It was gathered that the Christmas cow was bought at the popular Ugwuoba cattle market near Awka, Anambra State capital at the rate of N120, 000.

Unfortunately, when the butcher was making preparations to slaughter the animal, the angry cow seemingly sensed the fate that was about to befall it; thus it made a loud noise, yanked itself free from the rope with which it was tethered, and descended on the people waiting to share its meat. It went berserk, jumping all over the place. It broke the table placed in front of the building, used its horns to break the windscreen of a car parked close by, even as the people took to their heels. Unluckily for Obinna, he fell while running and the animal descended on him. The intervention of some Hausa (Suya sellers) and security officers in the neighbourhood prevented the ‘mad’ cow from sending Obinna to his early grave. Meanwhile, the madness could not stop the cow from being killed as it was later bundled and slaughtered by the Hausa boys.

I no blame the cow jaré. Even animals appreciate their lives as much as humans, it seems.
