Before I Die, I Want To . . .

f94710f6cd05ed28440f6a7067004a53It is public art made of private wishes.

In a phenomenon spreading across the globe, oversized blackboards, painted on buildings and freestanding displays, invite passers-by to complete the sentence: “Before I die I want to …” Answers, some profound, some profane, are written on stenciled lines with pieces of sidewalk chalk picked from the ground below.

“… make my dad proud.”

“… find the yin to my yang.”

Since artist Candy Chang created the first wall on an abandoned house in her New Orleans neighborhood in 2011, more than 400 walls have gone up in the United States and more than 60 other countries, including Kazakhstan, Mexico, Iraq, Haiti, South Korea and South Africa. (more…)

Nigerian Senate set to pass bill seeking 7-year jail term for Government Critics

Nigerian-Seante-December-2013-BellaNaija-600x336Watch out, critics! The long arm of the law is stretching out towards Facebook and Twitter.

According to a report by Daily Trust, the Nigerian Senate is set to pass a law seeking a 7-year jail term for social media critics who are found guilty of inciting the public against the Nigerian government. It simply means an activist may be arrested and sent to jail for 7 years if he/she turns the people against the federal government.

The proposed legislation which has scaled second reading in the upper legislative chamber is also proposing a stiffer punishment for internet fraudsters and scammers in Nigeria as those convicted will face a seven-year imprisonment. (more…)

Scarlett Johansson may have gotten engaged to boyfriend Romain Dauriac in September, but one guy apparently is apparently still hoping for a shot with the actress—and he’s come up with a novel way to get her attention—or at least someone that looks like her.

So, any takers here? *looking at the ladies* He could be rich and handsome and your Prince Charming. All you have to do is look like Scarlett Johansson. 😀

Those Scars . . . Agonies That Went Unsaid

Can I ever forget your face?

My slew of scars will always remind me

Of the savage glare in your feline stare

Stalking me with much beadiness

Like an enraged panther

Closing in on a vulnerable prey

*

I still recall

The stench of your breath

Of aerosols laden with booze

And those abysmal tribal marks

On your pitch-dark contoured face

*

You were that shadow

Conjured from the land of nightmares

The fearsome old ghost

Lurking in my corridors

Your clammy perspiration

Instilling trepidation

Down the length of my spine

Suffusing every part of me

*

Your muscled grip was upon my mouth

Cutting back the teary sobs into muffled ululations

While your wrinkled geriatric finger

Worked its torture

Palpating the cleft of paediatric rump

Navigating the secret realms of my thighs

*

I was simply a child (more…)

‘Science’ is the word of the year, according to Merriam Webster Dictionary

article-2517564-19CE61A100000578-896_634x428‘Selfie’ may have been named word of the year by Oxford University Press last month, but today, Merriam-Webster announced ‘science’ to be their word of 2013.

The publisher of Oxford dictionaries tracked a huge jump in overall usage of selfie (“a qualitative selection meant to embody a shift in culture,” according to Time), but Merriam-Webster stuck primarily to look-ups on its website, recording a 176 percent increase for science when compared with last year.

Which means lots and lots of people looked up the definition of “science” this year. Who is looking up the definition of science this much though?!? (more…)

The Things They Say: 150

”For me, music is always there. Music connects me to my emotions. Someone once told me that singing is my gift and acting is my reward for using my gift. God chose to bless me with an acting career because I honoured the gift of singing that he gave me.”

Singer Brandy blasted for posting ‘negative’ pictures of Africa

123The last American famous person who was put on blast for not quite getting it right with Africa was Hollywood actor, Lance Gross (Read HERE). And now, it’s Brandy’s turn. Quite a number of people from different parts of Africa blasted the singer for posting photos on her instagram page that they felt ‘portrayed Africa in a bad light’. Brandy, who was in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire a few days ago to perform, posted the photo above and called it ‘Beauty’. She posted another picture of three young boys in tattered clothing and called it ‘depth’.

Africans didn’t see the ‘beauty’ or ‘depth’ in the photos. More responses after the cut… (more…)
